When I had the opportunity to go on a mission trip to Johannesburg, South Africa in 2005, my view on poverty changed. I saw so many things that families and children needed, but I also saw the genuine smiles on their faces because they didn’t know they needed these “things” that came to my mind. However, one thing all of us knew that was needed were shoes. I have a photo of a member of our team tracing the foot of one of the little boys we coached in soccer all week. (We dubbed this little boy the South African American Idol because he was always singing and performing for us! He was awesome!) When the end of the week came, this team member brought with him to camp, dozens of shoes for kids that needed them. It was an amazing sight to behold as he so freely gave his time (to trace these kids feet to try and match their shoe size) and his resources to buy shoes for these kids that needed them.
TOMS does an incredible job of not just providing shoes and now eye wear for children around the globe, but they do an amazing job of making people aware of this need… and bringing people in to help the cause. They’ve grown and changed so much that they’re now producing their Giving Pairs (shoes that are given to children) in the countries where they’re giving them! So not only are they giving one pair of shoes away for each pair purchased but they’re also creating jobs in the countries where they’re giving away the shoes!!! Can you see my heart leaping at this news?!?
So, for today’s final birthday week giveaway, we’re going to send a pair of shoes to a child in need and help support a company that’s helping make a difference around the globe. The winner will receive a pair of TOMS ballet flats (because they’re REALLY cute!), or a style of your choice. This giveaway is ONLY happening today so you have until midnight to enter!
And congrats to the winner of the fashionABLE scarf from Wednesday’s giveaway… Judith!!
